Exclusive: Accounting AI startup Rillet reaches unicorn status with $1 billion valuation. Its founder says he wants to give CFOs back their weekends | Fortune

"Our message is not that we're coming after jobs," Rillet CEO Nicolas Kopp told Fortune. "That's just not correct."

TITLE: Accounting AI Startup Rillet Achieves Unicorn Status With 1 Billion Dollar Valuation

Rillet, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence for the accounting industry, has officially reached a valuation of $1 billion. This milestone follows a significant funding round that has pushed the total capital raised by the firm to more than $200 million. ICONIQ led the investment, which also featured contributions from existing supporters Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Oak HC/FT.

Iconiq Leads NEW Funding Round

The latest financial injection included several new participants, such as Battery Ventures, Bain Capital Ventures, Sequoia Global Equities, FirstMark, Creandum, and Scale Venture Partners. As part of this expansion, Seth Pierrepont, a general partner at ICONIQ, has been appointed to the board of directors at Rillet. For Nicolas Kopp, the co-founder and CEO of Rillet, the achievement is deeply connected to his professional roots in finance and accounting.

Kopp explained to Fortune that his primary objective is to alleviate the heavy workload that often prevents Chief Financial Officers from spending time with their families on weekends. He noted that finance leaders frequently find themselves trapped in spreadsheets and presentation preparation long after other employees have finished their work. Kopp stated that his company aims to use AI as a tireless back-office assistant rather than a replacement for human workers. He emphasized that the firm is not targeting jobs, but is instead positioning AI as a tool to enhance what individuals with domain expertise can accomplish.

AI as a Helper for Cfos

The growth of Rillet has been remarkably rapid since its public debut approximately two years ago. Following a Series A round led by Sequoia last summer, the company finalized a Series B just a few weeks later. During that time, the startup saw its new annual recurring revenue double every quarter. This momentum continued into the most recent funding round, with revenue doubling again over the last three months.

Rillet currently provides services to more than 600 customers. While its client list includes prominent AI-focused organizations like Neuralink, Mercor, and Skild AI, the company is also expanding into traditional industries. Kopp revealed that roughly 40% of the customer base now operates outside the technology sector, including businesses in movie production and waste recycling. One standout client, Mercor, reportedly utilizes Rillet’s AI agents to manage a business scaling beyond $2 billion in annual recurring revenue with a finance department consisting of only three people.

Disrupting Legacy ERP Systems

Rillet is positioning its technology as a direct challenger to established enterprise resource planning systems such as SAP, Oracle Fusion, Workday, NetSuite, and Microsoft’s Great Plains. Kopp argued that these legacy platforms were designed for a pre-AI era, requiring humans to manually input and verify data. In contrast, Rillet utilizes an agent-first architecture capable of running hundreds of operations at the same time. Seth Pierrepont noted that this allows multibillion-dollar companies to operate with finance teams that are one-tenth the size of traditional departments.

To strengthen its industry presence, Rillet has established a partnership with EY and currently works with over half of the top 20 CPA firms identified by Accounting Today. Kopp attributed much of the recent progress to the rapid advancement of underlying AI models over the past six months, which has reduced day-long tasks to just a few minutes. He believes this technology is essential as the accounting profession faces a shrinking pipeline of new graduates entering the field. According to Kopp, AI agents can help fill this talent gap while ensuring a complete audit trail and more consistent financial data.
