KeyCorp (KEY) Presents at Barclays 24th Annual Global Financial Services Conference Transcript

KeyCorp CFO Clark Khayat Provides Outlook at Barclays Conference

Jason Goldberg opened the segment covering the day’s final two large‑cap banks, noting that KeyCorp would follow Citigroup. He introduced Clark Khayat, Chief Financial Officer of KeyCorp, who joined the Barclays 24th Annual Global Financial Services Conference for a discussion on the current economic environment and client trends.

Macro Backdrop Shifts

Khayat acknowledged that the macroeconomic setting has altered significantly since his appearance a year earlier. He contrasted the previous focus on potential policy easing with today’s more cautious stance, emphasizing that the backdrop now features heightened uncertainty.

Rate Outlook Changes

Addressing the path of interest rates, Khayat explained, “Yes. So if we were here a year ago, we would have been talking about how many cuts there were going to be coming into ’26. We obviously haven’t seen that. And if you look at the forwards this morning, now it’s 3 pretty high probability hikes. So very different.” The forward curves he referenced suggest three likely rate increases, a departure from the earlier expectation of multiple cuts slated for 2026.

Client Activity and Sentiment

Despite the shift in rate expectations, Khayat observed that client activity remains broadly constructive. He described the economy as appearing resilient, noting that “the economy appears resilient.” He added that throughout 2026, KeyCorp has been operating within an “underlying constructive economy and a bunch of uncertainty,” with the source of that uncertainty evolving each month.

Khayat highlighted that clients are adapting to the fluid environment. He said, “when we talk to our clients, they’re telling us, regardless of that source of uncertainty, they’re getting comfortable sort of navigating this area.” This sentiment suggests that, even as the drivers of uncertainty change, customers feel increasingly able to manage the shifting conditions.

The CFO’s remarks painted a picture of a banking sector that, while facing a more aggressive rate trajectory, continues to see steady client engagement. The combination of a resilient macro backdrop and adaptable client behavior provides KeyCorp with a foundation to navigate the evolving economic landscape throughout the remainder of the year and into 2026.
