SpaceX is hiring for natural gas trading to support energy needs

[HOUSTON] Elon Musk’s SpaceX is hiring a trader to build and lead a natural gas trading team to support the space flight company’s growing fuel and power needs. Read more at The Business Times.

SpaceX Announces Hiring Drive for Natural‑Gas Trading Lead

Elon Musk’s aerospace firm SpaceX has posted a vacancy for a senior trader who will create and head a natural‑gas trading unit. The role is described as concentrating on both physical and financial aspects of natural‑gas markets, underscoring the company’s need for reliable fuel and power as it expands its manufacturing and launch activities.

Power Plant and Chipmaking Needs

The recruitment notice highlights the critical role that electricity generation and industrial fuel will play in SpaceX’s broader strategy, which now includes semiconductor production. Earlier this month the company disclosed plans to construct its own gas‑fired power stations to meet the energy demands of a large chip‑fabrication plant it is developing in Texas in partnership with Tesla. Rising electricity consumption from data‑center operators and newly built factories has spurred interest in additional gas‑powered facilities, a trend that aligns with Musk’s long‑standing preference for vertical integration across his businesses.

Starship’s Methane Requirements

SpaceX’s flagship Starship launch vehicle relies on super‑cooled methane—essentially the main component of natural gas—combined with liquid oxygen for propulsion. Securing a steady supply of methane and the associated power infrastructure is therefore a strategic priority for the company as it scales up launch cadence and pursues ambitious space‑flight objectives.

Competition from Other Tech Giants

The move mirrors recent statements from other major technology firms such as Meta and OpenAI, which have signaled intentions to enter power‑trading activities to satisfy their growing energy consumption. These companies, like SpaceX, are looking to manage costs and reliability by gaining direct access to energy markets.

Location and Work‑arrangement Details

According to the job posting, the position will be based at either the Cape Canaveral launch complex in Florida or the Starbase site in Texas. The advertisement explicitly rules out remote work and notes that the role will not be situated in traditional gas‑trading centers such as Houston, Calgary or Stamford, Connecticut.

Related Industry Movement

In a separate development, Jardine C&C announced the sale of its Singapore and Malaysia dealership operations to Indonesia’s Chandra Asri. The transaction is reported to generate a gain of US$221 million for Jardine C&C, reflecting continued consolidation activity within the regional chemicals and energy distribution sector.
