Taiwan shares close higher on thin turnover ahead of Fed decision
The Taiwanese stock market closed higher on Wednesday, with the Taiex, the Taiwan Stock Exchange's benchmark index, ending at 45,848.90, up 337.41 points or 0.74 percent. The index moved within a range of 45,546.56 and 46,077.82 during the session. The total turnover for the day was NT$643.77 billion (US$20.22 billion), which was below the average of NT$689.2 billion over the previous five sessions.
Market Analysis
Kevin Su, an analyst at Hua Nan Securities, said the market’s gains were largely technical, reflecting a rebound after several sessions of losses. Over the prior four sessions, the Taiex had slipped 1,671.87 points, or 3.54 percent. Su noted that investors showed little appetite for chasing prices, as many waited for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision and any clues about its next policy move.
Investor Sentiment
Market participants focused on remarks from Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh and the Fed’s dot‑plot, which outlines individual policymakers’ interest‑rate projections. Su added that the relatively thin turnover makes it hard for the Taiex to break out of a narrow trading range. Optimism about artificial‑intelligence‑related demand lifted the technology sector, with buying concentrated on memory‑chip makers and select electronic‑component firms.
Sector Performance
Memory‑chip producers Nanya Technology Corp. and Winbond Electronics Corp. each climbed 5.96 percent, closing at NT$492.50 and NT$169.00 respectively. Contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which represents more than 40 percent of the market’s total value, finished unchanged at NT$2,380.00. Its ASIC‑design subsidiary Global Unichip Corp. rose 2.24 percent to NT$6,170.00.

Power‑management specialist Delta Electronics Inc. gained 2.40 percent to end at NT$1,710.00, while printed‑circuit‑board supplier Compeq Manufacturing Co. rose 2.97 percent to NT$225.00. iPhone assembler and AI‑server builder Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. edged up 0.61 percent to NT$248.00, and fellow AI‑server producer Quanta Computer Inc. advanced 2.25 percent to NT$340.50.
Financial Stocks
Financial‑sector shares moved higher on expectations that a Fed rate hike would boost overseas interest income. The sector rose 1.43 percent, with Cathay Financial Holding Co. up 2.27 percent at NT$112.50 and Fubon Financial Holding Co. gaining 1.32 percent to NT$153.00.
Old‑economy Stocks
