Tesla Moves Closer to Commercializing Humanoid Robot Optimus

Tesla engineers have recently traveled to China to inspect suppliers of robotics components, a move that suggests the company is making progress toward commercializing its humanoid robot, Optimus. This development follows a JPMorgan visit to Tesla’s Fremont plant that confirmed a four‑month transition to humanoid production lines after the end of Model S/X production in May.

Inspection of Suppliers

Bloomberg reported that Tesla’s technical team arrived in Ningbo, a major port and manufacturing hub in Zhejiang province on China’s eastern coast, to tour factories that produce parts for Optimus. The audit is being read as a positive sign for China’s humanoid supply chain, indicating that Tesla is moving toward repeatable production of the robot. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Ian Ma noted that sentiment could stay upbeat if the inspections result in confirmed supplier selections and larger purchase orders.

Progress Toward Commercialization

Tesla is said to be aiming for commercial sales of Optimus in the second half of 2027, though actual manufacturing is expected to start earlier. JPMorgan analyst Rajat Gupta said the “Optimus Academy” will be up and running later this year, allowing robots to gather real‑world training data before being deployed on factory floors. The effort aligns with Elon Musk’s broader strategy of leveraging Tesla’s AI and robotics expertise to create a versatile humanoid platform.

Market Reaction

The news nudged the Solactive China Humanoid Robotics Index up about 1.4% on Friday, even as the index remains down roughly 30% for the year. Earlier in August, enthusiasm for physical AI surged after China’s Unitree IPO, but that momentum did not sustain. Despite the recent dip, analysts continue to see strong growth potential for humanoid robots.

Analyst Expectations

Bernstein analyst Eunice Lee warned that the adoption curve for humanoids is likely to be steeper than the century‑long rollout of automobiles. Goldman Sachs analysts recently lifted their global delivery forecasts, projecting 75,000 units shipped in 2026, 890,000 in 2030 and 6.5 million in 2035, up from earlier estimates of 51,000, 256,000 and 1.4 million respectively.
