Trump announces 'economic warfare' on Iran, threatens ‘tremendous’ consequences for its backers

The announcement extends a pressure campaign the Trump administration has waged since April under the banner Operation Economic Fury.

President Donald Trump told followers on Truth Social that the United States will begin what he called “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country” aimed at Iran, warning that any nation that helps Tehran dodge sanctions will face “tremendous economic consequences” of its own.

Economic Warfare Announcement

Trump wrote that “this will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.” He added, “No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me,” and noted, “TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it.” The president claimed that Iran’s navy, air force and military‑production facilities have been destroyed, its currency rendered worthless and the regime left “hanging by a thread.” He said any country whose financial institutions, businesses, airports or government entities provide a “lifeline” to Iran will be punished.

Targeted Channels

The president listed specific avenues he wants shut down immediately: oil smuggling, currency‑swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries and front companies. He stressed that the United States will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon and that cutting these channels is essential to that goal.

Operation Economic Fury

The new threat expands a campaign the Trump administration launched in April under the banner Operation Economic Fury. That effort has focused on choking what officials describe as Iran’s global terror‑financing and revenue streams. Since the start of the campaign, the United States has layered additional sanctions and diplomatic pressure in an attempt to force Tehran to change its behavior.

Iranian Response

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of escalating sanctions after earlier rounds failed to compel Tehran to submit, calling the approach a barrier to any negotiated exit from the conflict. The day before Trump’s post, the United Arab Emirates—one of Iran’s key commercial partners—suspended all trade and financial dealings with Tehran, citing two Iranian ballistic missiles it said were fired at the Gulf state. Iran denied launching the missiles and labeled the accusation a “false flag.”

Market Reaction

Financial markets showed only a modest response to the announcement. Stock futures edged higher, with S&P 500 futures gaining less than 0.1 percent after the president’s statements. Analysts noted that while the rhetoric signals a hardening stance, the immediate impact on global markets appears limited, leaving investors to watch how the promised economic measures will be implemented.
